10 Awesome Reasons To Use Natural Oils For Hair Growth (part 2)

natural oils for hair growth

Last week I shared with you my first 5 reasons to use hair oils.

(If you missed it, here you are).

Now, let’s see which are my rest 5 reasons to use naturals oils for hair growth!

6) Carrier & essential oils are much more than just “in fashion”.

These oils have being used for their natural therapeutic properties since forever. It has been documented that essential oils were used 6.000 years ago in ancient civilizations. The ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Indians, Greeks and Romans used them for beauty, hygiene and therapeutic purposes and for rituals.

Essential oils can be applied for almost any health condition, physical or mental.

For hair treatment essential oils:

  • can act as stimulants, astringents, insect repellents, moisturizers.
  • have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effects, antiviral and antifungal activity.
  • combat itchiness, dandruff and other conditions of the scalp.

These oils are the core of what today we name “aromatherapy”.

Aromatherapy is considered to be quite effective in treating hair conditions. Remember that you should always consult your physician and dermatologist of course, since we are talking about hair care and scalp treatment. Don’t play games with your health if you are experiencing a severe or persistent problem.

During 1980-2000, aromatherapy was rediscovered in Western countries when interest in complimentary and alternative medicine (like acupuncture, reiki, chiropractic) began to grow.

Of course, there are still doctors of western medicine that don’t acknowledge aromatherapy as a solid treatment for medical conditions. Despite that, it is known that there are several cases were aromatherapy has been applied in hospitals, intensive care units and maternity hospitals.

And don’t forget spa’s, where the use of essential and carrier oils is a must!

7) Mix different essential oils to benefit the hair & scalp.

An increased potency can be achieved with synergistic blends.

For instance chamomile essential oil has anti-inflammatory activity that can be increased by adding lavender essential oil in the correct proportion. The interaction can give a new active ingredient that obviously could not be achieved by using just a single component.

Each carrier oil can be enriched with different essential oils to provide combinations of properties and characteristics for your hair, depending on the desired effect.

Mixing essential oils is something between art and science.

You have to take into account the chemistry of the oil such as the volatility, viscosity, and its properties and the desired therapeutic action you want to achieve. While mixing carrier oils is an easier task, essential oils have different chemical compositions. Until you get the hang of it, it can be a little tricky to create effective blends.

Usually you can mix up to three essential oils and they don’t all pair with each other.

Blending oils for hair growth is great and beneficial because there is an array of oils to select from and many variations you can create!

And if you want to go pro, then the sky is the limit. You can check out the approved schools by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. It’s up to you.

The term aromatherapy was invented in 1928 by a French chemist & scholar, René-Maurice Gattefossé who is regarded as the Father of Aromatherapy.

8)  Essential oils can enhance the potency of hair care products.

Essential oils compliment your shampoo, conditioner or mask not only by boosting the efficiency of the hair treatment but also by giving you an extraordinary relaxing or stimulating scent.

Add your favorite essential oil to unscented natural shampoos and conditioners to enjoy the aroma.

Add 2-3 drops of the essential oil of your preference to the shampoo or conditioner in your palm for one application (15ml). If you are afraid that you might drop more oil, then mix 2-3 drops of the essential oil for every 15ml of your hair care product in a glass bowl and stir it to blend. If you have sensitive skin or irritated scalp reduce drops in half (1 drop for every 15ml). If you find that it burns your scalp, wash it off.

9)  There are oils for hair growth available for every preference and budget.

There are too many carrier and essential oils to choose from. For different hair types, hair and scalp conditions, personal scent preference and budget. Although at first you may find them expensive, especially essential oils, remember that are highly concentrated so you will need just a few drops in each use.

Don’t worry, they are surely cost-effective!

10)  You don’t have to be a certified specialist to use oils for hair growth.

It would be lovely to have a specialist to massage your scalp and take care or your hair locks, but it takes time and money. Right?

The good news is that you can massage your own scalp with the use of therapeutic essential and carrier oils and take advantage of all the wonderful properties.

Just keep in mind that everything isn’t for everybody.

Watch out for any allergies (food, skin, respiratory), do an essential oil skin patch test (usually on the inside of the elbow) at least a day before the use to avoid unwanted reaction. If you feel unsure, don’t get bored to do a research and always consult your physician.

Be extremely careful and seek professional advice if you want to use essential oils on babies, children or the elderly. If you are pregnant you should also be alerted. During the first semester is forbidden to use essential oils. Due to their potency some oil are too toxic to use.

Have you tried any natural oils for hair growth? Do you have any other reason to add to this list?
